Question 1

What goes into building a gravel driveway the right way?

Accepted Answer

A gravel driveway is built in layers, not dumped. We clear the path, grade and crown it so water runs off, lay and compact a base layer, then top it with driving rock. On rural drives around Liberty Hill and Bertram, we add ditches or culverts wherever the ground needs them.

Question 2

Why hire a gravel driveway installer instead of doing it myself?

Accepted Answer

A long gravel driveway takes a lot of material, heavy equipment, and real compaction. Skip any of that and you get ruts and washouts by the next big rain. On a quarter-mile drive out by Bertram or Burnet, that's not a weekend project with a rented skid steer.

Question 3

How do you keep a gravel driveway from washing out?

Accepted Answer

We crown the driveway so it sits higher in the middle and rain runs off to the sides, not down the center. We cut ditches along the edges and set culverts where the drive crosses low spots. Water is what destroys gravel driveways, so drainage gets planned before any rock goes down.

Question 4

Why hire a local contractor for a rural gravel driveway?

Accepted Answer

Central Texas acreage has clay that turns slick when wet, limestone just under the surface in places, and storms that move a lot of water fast. We build rural driveways around Leander, Liberty Hill, Burnet, Florence, and out to Lampasas, so we know what the ground will do before we start.

Question 5

How is a gravel road on acreage different from a regular driveway?

Accepted Answer

A gravel road on 10 to 20+ acres is longer, often a quarter mile to a mile or more, and it carries trucks, trailers, and equipment. That means more clearing, a deeper base, wider grading, and more drainage work. Building those long rural roads is our specialty.

Question 6

Do you clear the land before building a gravel driveway?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We clear brush, trees, stumps, and rock along the route and cut a clean path to your homesite, then grade it so the driveway sits on solid ground. It's one job with one crew, from raw land to finished drive.

Question 7

How long does it take to build a gravel driveway?

Accepted Answer

It depends on length and how much clearing is involved. Large projects, like a long driveway or road on acreage, typically take a week to a month. A shorter residential drive in Leander goes faster.

Question 8

When is the best time of year to build a gravel driveway in Central Texas?

Accepted Answer

Drier stretches are best, because the base compacts tighter when the ground isn't saturated. Spring rains and late-summer storms can wash out a poorly built drive, so getting yours built and compacted before the wet season gives it the best start.

Question 9

Can you make a gravel driveway look finished, not just functional?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We shape clean edges and pick the top rock for the look and feel you want. On a rural drive, function comes first, but a well-built gravel driveway should look sharp pulling up to the house.

Question 10

Why choose Phillips Driveways for a gravel driveway or road?

Accepted Answer

Long rural driveways and roads are what we do. Chris and his crew have built them on acreage across Central Texas since 2020, using our own heavy equipment from clearing to final compaction. If you're in Central Texas and your driveway needs help, you already found the guy you need.
